Our Vision

Our Aims

Who are We?

Our vision is for every child, everywhere, to have the right to a good education.

We don’t want to build a school and walk away. We invest in people. From the local villages to senior government we create great teachers and leaders. Our work empowers communities to maintain and grow their school and take advantage of the life changing opportunities education provides.

  • To build and resource a ‘model’ rural elementary school to promote, advance and sustain education for boys and girls aged between 5-14 in well- equipped comfortable and safe classrooms

  • To build capacity by delivering training and supporting the Director and staff to provide good or better leadership and management and teaching and learning

  • To provide active and engaging lessons where all children, particularly girls are supported to develop knowledge, skills and understanding

  • To improve access to education and attendance, particularly for girls

  • To be able to share and sustain this model with significant others in the future

We are a small, UK registered charity. We are run by volunteers and have no paid staff. We were founded by our CEO, who, having spent a lifetime in education wanted to leave a legacy to support the most disadvantaged children in rural communities.

What do we do?

Together with our delivery partner, we work at grass-roots level to construct and develop a model rural elementary school for children aged five to fourteen years by -

  • Constructing classrooms

  • Providing resources

  • Providing uniforms and school bags

  • Building teaching capacity through training and monitoring

  • Providing training on teaching English using phonics methodology

  • Building and supporting leadership capacity

  • Developing skills, knowledge and understanding of English

How do we do it?

We work in partnership with the Ministry of Education and our delivery partners, Together We Learn. We generate funding from a number of different sources, including donations, grants, sponsors and the Ministry of Education who provide salaries for school staff.

Where do we work?

Our project is located in a rural village called Gendit in northern Ethiopia. The village is central to five other villages. Children can walk to school and the nearest secondary school is just one kilometre away. The nearest university is 35 kilometres away. This means that when our project is completed, children can access all three stages of education.

Why is our project needed?

How You Can Help Us

‘Ethiopia has made significant progress toward universal primary education with a net enrolment of 88.7% in the 2021/2022 school year. Although most children enrol in school, many drop out with only 33.1% making it to secondary school. The quality of learning is also a major challenge, with 90% of 10 year olds not knowing how to read or understand a simple text based sentence. The likelihood of children going to school, staying in school, and performing well is significantly lower in rural settings. The combined effect of COVID-19, conflict and climate change has contributed to at least 13 million children being out of school in Ethiopia, with long term consequences for their future. The impact of emergencies on education is overlaid by other barriers such as traditional gender norms, a high burden of domestic work (especially for girls), and long distances to school. Many of the out of school children are from pastoralist, internally displaced or refugee communities’.
