A Pandemic Doesn't Stop Progress! May 2020
It’s been an interesting and challenging few months but a pandemic doesn’t stop progress. Ethiopia has not escaped the pandemic, but so far, its effect has not been as devastating as predicted. Maybe this is due to the majority of the population being below 65 years old; maybe because government restrictions and circumstances somehow mean the spread has been limited. No one knows but Ethiopians are beginning to go back to business as usual.
Although our school has been shut since March, the building of the perimeter fencing is still going ahead. It will be a great investment to keep our children, school (and animals) safe.
Next up, four old classrooms will be refurbished and resourced ready for Grades 3, 4 and 5 to move into in September 2020. Work on the WASH/WATER station will begin so that children and staff have fresh water for hand washing, drinking and cleaning. At the moment, children bring water from the local well, which is at least 500m from the school. A guard house will be built for the two guards (aka site managers). The school gate and signage will be constructed and the school field will be cleared of a million stones. Finally, volleyball and football posts will be erected and then we can enter the world Premier League!
Teacher training continues, despite the slight disruption due to the school being shut and a model teacher has been temporarily employed to help support our teachers.
